August 18, 2008 - We added several items to our Dip Pens page today, including some figural and boxed nibs and dip pen sets. Though we normally think of vintage dip pens as instruments for general writing,  many were made in days gone by to be used for broad edge lettering and artistic endeavors. These have some unusual nibs and are not easy to locate today. Look for Items DIP-401 through DIP-407 in our vintage dip pen listings.

August 15, 2008 - We have some updated information for you on the new Diamine ink colors noted as "coming soon" in our Diamine ink section of the website. According to Diamine in UK, the inks will all be shipped to our US Distributor the week of August 18th via ship. Arrival usually takes about 4 weeks, plus time to clear customs. Our new ETA on the upcoming Diamine colors is mid-late September. Thanks for your patience!

August 14, 2008 - We got back in from the Washington DC Fountain Pen SuperShow Wednesday evening. I'm always amazed at how many people from around the globe attend this show. It's one big, busy weekend of pens and pen people, or as one of our customers called it, "The Disney World of Pens"! That seemed quite appropriate. Our thanks to all who stopped by to visit for a few minutes and make purchases, appreciate it!

We are back to our regular next day shipping schedule now. If you placed an order on Wednesday before 6PM CDT, it's going out to you today, Thursday. We still have some odds and ends to check on for a few people, but we're working on that now, so if you're waiting on a reply, it's coming soon!

Sorry, no Inky Greetings went out today since we're still unpacking, but Inky Greetings will be back next week.

Y'all are the best customers in the world! We truly appreciate all your patience while we attended the DC Pen Show. No more trips for us until early October when we'll head to the Dallas Pen Show on Oct 3-4.

August 12, 2008 - If you like to fiddle around and mix inks, you might like the two items we just listed on our Ink Accessories page - cotton tipped applicators and pipettes.

August 8, 2008 - Today, August 8, 2008, marks the 100th Anniversary of W.A. Sheaffer's patent for the invention of the lever filling fountain pen. You may have a Sheaffer Pen in your collection with the August 8, 1908 patent date engraved on the barrel.

Even if you don't have one of these very early Sheaffer pens, today would be a good day to pull out a lever filling fountain pen to write with in honor of W.A.'s invention.

August 6, 2008 - As you read this we should be across the Mississippi by now and headed east toward the Washington DC Fountain Pen SuperShow.

The show will be held this coming weekend August 8-10 at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel in Tysons Corner, Virgina and will host collectors and exhibitors from around the world, we hope to see you there, too!

In addition to the vintage pen parts, Sheaffer & Parker boxed vintage pens and the oddball Sheaffer factory memorabilia mentioned below in our July 31 post, we'll have a very good selection of fully restored Parker 51s, Sheaffer PFMs and a lot of other vintage fountain pens, many with flexible nibs. Lots of ink is headed to the show, pen repair supplies, pen cases, pen books and a little sprinkling of everything else we offer. Remember that Exaclair will be with us at the DC Pen Show so we'll have a large selection of Clairefontaine, Rhodia, G Lalo and J Herbin Inks for you to select from.

Just a reminder that Pendemonium will be set up in the main ballroom, in our usual spot against the back wall, we look forward to seeing you at the largest pen show in the world!

Since we returned from Portland, I've been sorting vintage pen parts and we'll have some of these along with us including Parker Duofold, Parker Vac and some Eversharp Skyline parts. Also a selection of boxed vintage Sheaffers and Parkers along with a whole slew of unboxed vintage pens - and these are all fully restored and ready to write with, you can even try them out before you buy. Tucked in amidst the pens will be some really oddball Sheaffer collectibles from the factory here in Fort Madison, if you want a little remembrance from when Sheaffer's were made here in town, do take a peek. Lots of other things ready to be packed for the trip, too. July 16, 2008 - Advertising blotters were once as common as business cards. They served their purpose perfectly as a reminder of a business or product and were also useful to blot your writing. Unfortunately, many more that we care to think about were thrown away. We can't save everything, can we? Wait, that's probably a bad question to ask me! We have some new additions to our vintage advertising blotter listings, including a very nice Sengbusch blotter from 1937.

July 12, 2008 - Inky Greetings to all from the Portland Pen Show! We've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari ....no, wait, that's the LA trip theme song- LOL! We've been from Fort Madison to Portland! Saw a fabulous fireworks show in Sioux City. Visited the landmark tourist trap of all times, Wall Drug. Were awed by the Custer herd of buffalo. Stopped by to visit the presidents at Mount Rushmore. Snuck in a quick trip to Powell's and are easing out of the wild west for a few days and into city life. The Mississippi in Fort Madison, Iowa

We hope you'll click on the link and take a peek at Fort Madison under siege! We were very fortunate to be on high ground and Pendemonium sustained no damage at all.

July 10, 2008 - As much as we love fountain pens, sometimes a ballpoint comes in handy, and when those times arise, the vintage ones are my favorites! Eversharp made some very nice art deco designed ballpoints and several of the ones just listed are just stunning, not to mention functional again after a 50 year rest period.

We also added lots of Parker Vacumatic mechanical pencils, these are all very clean and crispy models dating from 1935. Several colors of those cool Vac striped celluloids as well! Find the mate to your Vacumatic fountain pen or perhaps a nostalgic gift for a friend noting their birth year.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you Moms stopping by from all of us at Pendemonium! May your day be very special.

A Brief History of Mother's Day

In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

In Memory Of Sonya Mawhorter

Sonya Mawhorter

Our dear friend Sonya Mawhorter passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 3rd.

Many of you know Sonya as the bright shining face sitting behind the registration table at the Ohio and Raleigh Pen Shows. Her involvement with the pen community goes back many years and reaches far beyond these two delightful pen shows.

Sonya's smiling face, positive attitude, concern for others and a no nonsense get it done approach to all things she undertook served her well and made her a friend to all. Sonya was a very special lady who will be greatly missed.

We mourn her passing, but I fully believe that Sonya would want us to celebrate her life, a life that was cut short far too soon.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the Mawhorter family.

A Memorial Service for Sonya will be held Saturday, May 10, 4PM at Faith United Methodist Church in Zanesville, Ohio. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ohio League for the Mentally Retarded, Box 215, Delta, OH 43515.

Congratulations, Michelle!
