Vintage Pen Pin - Pin the bright chrome button to your blouse or sweater and just pull out the coiled retractable chain to write! Very nice chrome pencil with painted sky blue stripes. Pencil measures 2.5 inches, button measures 7/8 inch. The fine silver colored chain extends to 16 inches. Twist mechanism uses 1.1mm diameter leads. These were very popular in the 1950s, but found as early as the 1930s. No maker markings on this one, but I would guess that it is from the 50s simply based on the painted design and pin style on the back. Good coil spring action on this one! I thought I'd scan it with a little more of the chain showing, but it recoils right back into the button. Very good condition, paint in perfect condition.

Radium Point Pen Co - Buster Brown! Senior sized advertising pencil, this is a very nice advertiser! Wavy striped bright Jade Green with gold filled trim. Crown is marked: Radium Point Pen Co St Louis. The advertising engraving on barrel reads: Buster Brown Shoes - Brown Bilt Shoes. Measures 5 1/8 inches long. Twist mechanism uses 1.1mm diameter leads. This is a clip-less pencil, there never was a clip. If memory serves, this is the first Radium Point Pen Co writing instrument I've ever seen and rather fancy for an advertising pencil. There is one very shallow edge ding on crown, the ferrule is quite brassed, celluloid barrel in perfect condition.

Unknown Maker, ca. 1920s – When I first glanced at this pencil, I thought it was a Wahl-Eversharp, the styling is almost identical! Standard sized metal pencil in gold filled metal with chevron engraving. Spoon style clip. The crown is engraved: Pat June 14, 1921 Other Pat’s Pending. Twist mechanism extends and retracts 1.1mm diameter leads. Measures 4 7/8 inches long. Engraving pattern is worn and not as crisp as it would have been some 80 years ago. Refilling your
Vintage Mechanical Pencils

Most mechanical pencils made before the late 1960s and some even after that are refilled by feeding lead in from the Point End. Those that feed from the barrel (below the eraser) are a fairly modern invention! Don't be fooled by leads in the barrel, in older pencils, that was simply a space to store a few extra leads, but that's it - just storage. As always with vintage writing instruments, exceptions will crop up!

The instruction below are from a Sheaffer package insert, but apply to most older mechanical pencils.

Collectible Woodcase Pencils

Wood pencils may very well be the most user friendly writing instrument in the world!

Generally non-toxic, wood pencils are leak-proof, can delete your errors and are not subject to electronic snafus. Not to mention they are inexpensive and easy to acquire. A wood pencil can write on average a line abut 35 miles long - about 45,000 words. A sharpened pencil point can withstand writing pressure of about 3700 pounds of pressure per square inch before breaking off.

Early references to graphite date back to around 1564 when plumbago was discovered by shepherds and used to mark their flocks. In 1779 K.W. Scheele in Sweden discovered that plumbago was a form of carbon and named it graphite. In 1662, Friedrich Staedtler opened a pencil shop in Nurnberg, Germany. Kaspar Faber first commercially produced pencils in 1765 in Stein, Germany by binding graphite with Bavarian clay. Faber Castell continues to make pencils and other writing instruments today. Other early pencil inventors were Corte of France and Hardtmuth of Austria who worked on perfecting the graphite composition. Today, many of the early formulas for graphite are still in use by pencil makers.

We have vintage Pencil Tip Covers for your woodcase pencils!
