VINTAGE WATERMAN PENS AND PENCILS

Waterman 52 1/2V Fountain Pen and Mechanical Pencil Set in original box, ca. 1920s, red hard rubber with gold filled trim, ringtops. Fountain pen is lever fill – fills only from a bottle. Measures 4.25 inches long. Waterman’s Ideal 14KT gold nib, heart shaped vent hole is a very flexible point ranging from medium to very broad. Fountain pen feed is also red hard rubber. Pencil is twist activated and uses 1.1mm diameter leads. Pencil measures 3.75 inches long. This set is in an original Waterman Treasure Box! Clamshell style box is covered in green faux leather with gold border and lettering on top of lead: The Treasure Chest of To-day, soft green velvet lining inside and Waterman’s in green on a satin ribbon across the inside of lid. There is some damage to the box finish on the bottom on left end. Tad of high point brassing to FP and MP and there is a slight color shift on FP barrel – section & about a half inch of barrel below threads is just slightly darker than the lower end of barrel and pencil. Crisp imprints.

Refilling your
Vintage Mechanical Pencils

Most mechanical pencils made before the late 1960s and some even after that are refilled by feeding lead in from the Point End. Those that feed from the barrel (below the eraser) are a fairly modern invention! Don't be fooled by leads in the barrel, in older pencils, that was simply a space to store a few extra leads, but that's it - just storage. As always with vintage writing instruments, exceptions will crop up!

The instruction below are from a Sheaffer package insert, but apply to most older mechanical pencils.
